2014 moves into the rear view mirror we look forward to what promises to be a big and exciting year for employment law in New Zealand, both for employers and employees.

The National government, entering their third term, made quick work with changes to employment legislation. The Employment Relations Amendment Bill passed its third reading in late October. This amendment promises big changes to collective bargaining, employee rest and meal breaks, flexible working arrangements and business takeovers. For more on these changes, see this article.


The biggest changes on the horizon come in the form of the Health and Safety Reform Bill. This was introduced in early 2014; the report from the Select Committee is due March 2015. The new health and safety legislation is based on the Australian Work Health and Safety Act. No industries in New Zealand will be exempt from the changes. The bill looks to address New Zealand’s workplace fatality and incident rate, which it is estimated costs the country about $3.5 billion per annum. It puts the onus on employers to take a more proactive approach to health and safety and how their workplace approaches it. Employers need a complete system to proactively manage and reduce risk across all aspects of their businesses.
