Matariki: A Time to Reflect, Reconnect and Look Forward

July 8th, 2026 - By Barbara Buckett Last updated: 09 Jul 2026

"Matariki hunga nui" – Matariki, the gatherer of people.

As the stars of Matariki rise in the winter sky, many New Zealanders take time to pause, reflect on the year that has passed, celebrate those who have gone before us, and look ahead with hope and purpose.

At BuckettLaw, we see Matariki as a valuable reminder that our working lives are about more than contracts, policies, and processes. They are fundamentally about people, relationships, and communities.

A whakataukī that resonates strongly at this time of year is:

"Mā te huruhuru ka rere te manu."
Adorn the bird with feathers so it may fly.

The whakataukī reminds us that people flourish when they are supported, valued, and equipped to succeed. In the workplace, this means creating environments where employees and employers can contribute together meaningfully to foster trust, fairness, and respect.

Matariki encourages us to reflect on what has been learned over the past year. For employers, this may be an opportunity to consider whether workplace practices are supporting staff wellbeing, engagement, and development. For employees, it can be a time to take stock of career goals, achievements, and aspirations for the future.

Employment law often comes into focus when workplace relationships break down. However, the best employment relationships are built long before disputes arise. Clear communication, good faith, mutual respect, and early resolution of concerns remain the foundations of healthy workplaces and are the cornerstones of our employment legislation.

The concept of looking to the future is central to Matariki. As organisations plan for the year ahead, periods of change can present both opportunities and challenges. Whether businesses are growing, restructuring, or adapting to economic pressures, taking a thoughtful and people-centred approach helps ensure that legal obligations are met while maintaining workplace mana and trust.

At BuckettLaw, we are privileged to assist employers and employees to navigate these important moments. We understand that behind every employment matter is a person, a whānau, and a future.

This Matariki, we encourage everyone to take time to celebrate achievements, reconnect with those who matter most, honour those who are no longer with us, and set intentions for the year ahead.

Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori.
Warm wishes to you, your whānau, and your workplace as we celebrate the Māori New Year on Friday despite the inclement weather.
