Understanding Matariki in the workplace

June 19th, 2025 - Barbara Buckett

Matariki reappears just before sunrise in late June, kicking off the start of the new year here in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

It’s not just a public holiday; it’s a time for us to look back on the year that’s gone by and think about what’s ahead. It's a chance to celebrate fresh beginnings and all the possibilities the new year brings.

Celebrating Matariki in the workplace offers a unique opportunity to recognise this significant cultural event, as well as enhance employee morale and strengthen team bonds.

Here are some ways to incorporate Matariki celebrations in your workplace:

  • Educate employees about Matariki and Māori culture: Host cultural workshops or bring in guest speakers.

  • Reflect on past achievements and set future goals: Plan activities that promote teamwork and reflection.

  • Incorporate te reo Māori in communications: Here’s a link to some greetings and sign-offs in te reo.

  • Organise a shared meal or hāngī: Bring your team together and enjoy traditional Māori cuisine together.

  • Support community and give back: As a team volunteer or organise a collection for a local charity or foodbank.

By engaging in meaningful practices, your workplace can truly embody the spirit of Matariki, fostering a sense of belonging and unity among employees.  These efforts not only celebrate the significance of Matariki but also contribute to a positive and respectful workplace environment.

Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori!
